Comrades,

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of all our VFW Posts, Districts, and
Departments, we are coming off of the first 100%+ membership year in nearly three
decades - and we're not about to let that momentum stop! Commander-in-Chief Doc
Schmitz is laying out the first Commander's Challenge of the 2019-2020 membership
year, for the month of August.

From August 1st to August 31st, the challenge is to recruit and reinstate the most
Annual members for your Post - for each Division, the ten Posts who accrue the most
New and Reinstated Annual members in August will be entered into a drawing for a
$1,000 prize to be deposited into the Post account! This time of year is perfect for
getting out into your communities and spreading the word about what your Post is
doing for veterans, and the mission of the VFW as a whole. Perhaps you may look into
getting a phone campaign going to contact lapsed members and let them know how
important their membership is to the VFW and what we do for veterans, to work on
bringing them back into the fold.

Let's make sure this membership year has a strong start, build upon the momentum we
have and keep this wave of membership excellence going! As the Commander-in-Chief's
motto states, it's time to show that we DARE TO CARE about our membership mission!

As always, the Membership Department is here to help with materials, training, and
answers for any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you again for all that you
do and all that you enable us to do as part of this great organization.

Topic: Combat-Injured Veterans Refund Claims – Time is Running Short

Who it affects: Veterans who received disability severance payments after 1991 and claimed it as income

Please share the attached IRS news release with veterans and veteran’s groups in your district and state as soon as possible. The release will post to the IRS.gov website at IRS.gov/newsroom.

Key points:

The Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016 provides that most veterans who received a one-time, lump-sum, disability severance payment when they separated from military service are entitled to a refund if that payment was claimed as income. The payment must have been received after Jan. 17, 1991, and before Jan. 1, 2017.

Eligible veterans should have received a mailed notice from the Department of Defense in July of 2018 explaining how to claim their tax refunds.

Deadlines are approaching, the time available for claiming these tax refunds is limited to:

·         One year from the date of the Department of Defense notice, or

·         Three years after the due date for filing the original return for the year the disability severance payment was made, or

·         Two years after tax was paid for the year the disability severance payment was made.

Eligible veterans who have not already filed their refund claim need to act soon. More information, including how to file the refund claim, is in the attached IRS news release.

Still more information is available on the IRS.gov website at the following Pages:

TREES FOR TROOPS

There’s nothing like the smell of a fresh tree to get you into the holiday spirit, and no one is more deserving of a little Christmas cheer than our service members and their families.
